The Tamil Nadu government has postponed the reopening of schools in the state. The new dates would be announced by the state government shortly after assessing the COVID-19 situation. Schools for classes 9-12 in the state would not reopen as of November 16, 2020.

The decision to postpone the reopening of schools in the state was made after a majority of parents voiced their opinion against the reopening of schools in the state amid the pandemic. The state government had obtained consent from parents and teachers on the reopening of schools after they faced widespread criticism from parent bodies.

The meeting was held on Monday with parents and teachers from public schools, government-subsidized schools and private schools. More than 12,000 schools held the meeting to get feedback on the reopening of schools in the state as of November 16. About 45 percent of the parents of the school’s students gave their opinion on whether the schools should reopen or not.

According to reports many parents of private school students were not in favor of reopening schools in November and he wanted the reopening of the schools to be postponed until January. However, parents of public school students wanted the schools to reopen in November.

While speaking to reporters on Tuesday, School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan had said: “The chief minister will make a final decision on the reopening of schools on November 16 and will make an announcement.”
