New Delhi:

The daily peak of coronavirus in Delhi reached a new record in the past 24 hours, with the city crossing the 8,000 mark and recording 8,593 cases. Yesterday, data from the Ministry of Health showed that the figure was 7,830, which was the highest at the time. The number of deaths in the last 24 hours was 85, the second highest recorded in the city. The highest figure was 93 deaths, which was recorded on June 16.

The total number of cases in Delhi is currently 4.59,975, the number of active cases is 42,629.

The outbreak of coronavirus cases coincides with the holiday season and the huge pollution outbreak coincides with the start of the winter season. For the past two weeks, the daily coronavirus outbreak has been on an upward spiral.

The spike comes on a day when the Delhi High Court detained the government of Arvind Kejriwal, who asked the government for measures taken over the past two weeks to control the contagion.

Noting that one city is now experiencing a larger daily increase than big states like Maharashtra and Kerala, the court asked if the government has any concrete plans to control the situation.

The court said that while other states impose restrictions, the Delhi government is relaxing all rules, allowing 200 people to attend public functions instead of reducing the number and allowing public transport to be fully occupied.

The court said these could become “super spreaders” of the infection.

The Delhi government said it is increasing the number of Covid tests to help control the spread. One of these methods is “targeted testing” at the markets during the holiday season.

It is being tested for both merchants and holiday shoppers. Additionally, restaurant and other staff must also undergo RT-PCR testing amid the holiday fever.

“Now three times more tests are being carried out compared to the last peak,” said Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain.

Underlining that the city is witnessing the third peak of coronavirus, the minister added: “We expect the cases to decrease in the coming days. 17,000 RT-PCR tests were carried out yesterday. We have increased the tests.”
