Will IPL 2021 have a ninth team? Probably a full mega auction

The 2020 IPL was successfully held in the United Arab Emirates amid the coronavirus pandemic and ended on Tuesday with the Mumbai Indians sealing a record fifth IPL title by beating the Delhi Capitals in the final by five wickets. The BCCI held the tournament successfully without any technical issues and there has been great appreciation for the Indian Cricket Board for the way the tournament was handled. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has said that the 2021 IPL will take place in India between April and May, while the women’s IPL will be played with seven or eight teams over the next two years.

However, there could be some major developments before IPL 2021. According to a report in The Hindu, the BCCI has plans to hold the entire mega auction before the start of the tournament. The main news could be that the 2021 IPL could feature a ninth team and that could be from Gujarat. Recently, the Motera Stadium in Gujarat underwent a renovation that increased the capacity to 110,000, making it the largest stadium by capacity.

Financial balance

According to The Hindu report, the full auction is planned as “BCCI has plans to add a ninth team” for the 2021 edition.

The 2020 IPL was postponed from the April to May to September to November window due to the coronavirus pandemic situation. BCCI officials are still holding on to their positions, as the Supreme Court could be pending requests for extension of tenure.

The BCCI Annual General Meeting in September tried to map out a plan for the resumption of national cricket in the country. The sides were selected for the Australia tour, while there were plans for England to tour India in February 2021 for a series of tests, ODI and T20I.

As the coronavirus situation continues to increase rapidly in India, the BCCI will wait for a solution soon if they have to host the tournament in India during the period of April and May.
