Arnab Goswami Moves Supreme Court Challenging Mumbai HC Order Denying Bail

Republic TV editor Arnab Goswami moved to the Supreme Court after the Bombay High Court dismissed his request for provisional bail in 2018 for instigating a suicide case on Monday.

Goswami was arrested along with two other people, Feroze Shaikh and Nitish Sarda, by Alibag police and held in custody for 14 days on November 4 in connection with the death of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik in 2018.

The 47-year-old journalist had previously filed a statement of bail with the Bombay High Court on Saturday. The court had reserved its order on Goswami’s guilty plea and gave him the option of filing the application in session court, which took and submitted a bond statement to a session court on Monday.

Following his arrest at his Lower Parel residence, Goswami was held at a local school designated as a Covid-19 center for Alibag Prison until November 8, after which he was transferred to Taloja Prison in Navi Mumbai.

Speaking to Republic TV reporters from a van that transported him from the prison quarantine center to jail on Sunday, Goswami alleged that he was being subjected to torture and that he was not allowed to speak to his lawyers.

The decision to transfer him to jail before he completed his quarantine period at school was made after he was allegedly found using someone’s mobile phone to access his social media accounts at the quarantine center. His own mobile phone was confiscated by the police at the time of his arrest.
