Villagers had previously said special prayers for Harris’s victory and once they were answered, they celebrated with much fanfare on Sunday.
Locals celebrated the 56-year-old Harris’ victory by busting cookies and distributing candy, even as reports suggested that special prayers could be held later in this regard.
A local woman from Painganadu who drew a big ‘kolam’ (Rangoli) was all smiles when she greeted the victory of the “woman of our house”.
The colorful “kolam” hailed Harris as the “pride” of the town.
The villagers had already kept the cookies ready in anticipation of Harris’s victory, even as the people were proud that their villages were the birthplace of Kamala Harris’s grandparents.
Thulasenthirapuram and Painganadu are agrarian towns and are located very close to each other close Mannargudi in the district.
Harris’s grandfather, PV Gopalan, moved from the village of Thulasenthirapuram when he was young and took a job in British government service.
His grandmother Rajam belonged to the nearby village of Painganadu.
Although Kamala’s ancestors left the village many decades ago, family members had kept their connections to the Thulasenthirapuram temple intact.
