Congress is celebrating the fourth anniversary of demonetization as “Vikshwasghaat Diwas” (Day of Betrayal).
Congressional leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday criticized the government for demonetization, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s move four years ago was aimed at helping some of his “crony capitalist friends” and had “destroyed” the Indian economy. .
Gandhi and Congress have been claiming that the 2016 demonetization was not in the people’s interest and had adverse effects on the economy, a charge that the government has repeatedly rejected.
In a video posted as part of the party’s ‘SpeakUpAgainstDeMoDisaster’ online campaign, Gandhi said the question is how the Bangladeshi economy “outperformed” the Indian economy as there was a time when India used to be a of the world’s highest performing economies.
“The government says the reason is COVID but if that is the reason, there is COVID in Bangladesh and other parts of the world as well. The reason is not COVID, the reason is ‘Notebandi’ and GST, ”Gandhi said in Hindi.
“Four years ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched an assault on the Indian economy. It injured farmers, workers and small merchants. Manmohan Singh ji said that the economy will lose two percent and that is what we saw, ”said the former head of Congress.
The Prime Minister had declared that it is a fight against black money, but it was not, Gandhi said.
“This was a lie. The attack was against you, Modi wanted to take your money and give it to his 2-3 crony capitalist friends. You were in ranks, not his crony capitalist friends. You put your money in the banks and Prime Minister Modi gave that money to his friends and gave them a 3.50 billion rupee loan exemption, ”Gandhi alleged.
Modi then implemented a “flawed GST” and small and medium-sized enterprises were destroyed when “he cleared the way for his 3-4 crony capitalist friends,” the congressional leader asserted.
Mr. Gandhi claimed that farmers were now being targeted by the three new farm laws that he said would “kill” them.
Modi has “destroyed” India’s pride – its economy, Gandhi said, adding: “We have to rebuild India together.”
