Supreme Court Grants Respite to Arnab Goswami in Case of Violation of Privilege, Issues Notice to Secretary of the Maharashtra Assembly | India News

New Delhi: In the case of the Maharashtra assembly’s violation of privilege motion, the Supreme Court granted Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami protection from arrest on Friday (November 6). The superior court, however, issued a good cause notice to the secretary of the legislative assembly for his letter to the journalist, allegedly warning him against releasing the house notice to the superior court.

The Supreme Court ordered the secretary of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly to explain within two weeks why the contempt process against him was not initiated.

The higher court issued this order while listening to the statement of journalist Arnab Goswami against the notice of cause of the show by the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra for the initiation of a motion for breach of privilege against him for a report related to the case of the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

The SC bench of the Chief Justice SA Bobde and the judges AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramaniancourt said: “This is a serious matter and amounts to contempt. The statements are unprecedented and tend to discredit the administration of justice and in any case , may amount to direct interference in the administration of Justice “.

“The intention of the author of the letter appears to be to intimidate the petitioner because he approached this court and to threaten him with a penalty for doing so,” the court observed.

In another case on Thursday, the Mumbai High Court refused to grant Arnab Goswami interim relief in a 2018 suicidal complicity case, even when a district court sent him into judicial custody two weeks earlier a day earlier and noted that his arrest “appears to be prima facie illegal.”

The 47-year-old Goswami’s request for provisional bond is currently in high court for hearing today.
