Delhi Prime Minister Arvind Kejwiral held a review meeting on Thursday to discuss the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the national capital. After the meeting, he ordered a ban on firecrackers amid the ongoing holiday season and the increase in medical infrastructure.
In a tweet, Kejriwal said that Covid-19 cases in Delhi have increased due to the festival season and pollution. The review meeting was attended by the chief clerk and all the district magistrates.
“Del HC has maintained our order to increase ICU beds in pvt hospitals. Appeal filed in SC yesterday. We hope that SC will lift the suspension taking into account the critical situation, ”said the prime minister in the tweet.
On Wednesday, the chief minister said that Delhi has witnessed a third wave of the Covid-19 outbreak, but added that the government is closely monitoring the situation and that there is no need to panic.
Over the past few days, Delhi has reported a huge increase in its daily Covid-19 count. There were 6,800 new cases and 51 more related deaths on Wednesday, bringing the overall tally to more than 400,000. This was the second day in a row that nearly 7,000 cases were reported in a 24-hour span.
The government has now started testing for Covid-19 in markets and other crowded areas to strengthen its surveillance mechanism.

The Union Home Office had recently attributed the recent increase in cases in Delhi due to the festive season and the leniency shown by residents in following restrictions related to Covid-19.
As the use of firecrackers increases pollution, which could lead to an increase in respiratory illnesses (critical in times of Covid-19), the National Green Court (NGT) issued notices to Delhi on Monday along with Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to ban its use as these four states are heavily affected by air pollution ahead of the winter season.
