Democrats entered the 2020 U.S. election seeking to reverse much of the dominant presence Republicans had in state governments, but instead ended up losing ground when votes were tallied on Wednesday.
Republicans won majorities in both houses of the New Hampshire House of Representatives and took back the Montana governor’s mansion, which had been in the hands of a retired Democrat.
Greg Gianforte’s victory in Montana over Democrat Mike Cooney gave Republicans 27 of the nation’s 50 governorates.
Republicans will end at least the 59 state legislatures they had before Election Day, but the final tally depends on Arizona, where the results are still incomplete, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) said.
Democrats, who started with just 39 cameras, increased their spending this year on campaigns in eight states, including Arizona, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Texas.
In 35 states, the prize that comes with control of legislatures is the ability to design congressional districts for partisan advantage, as Republicans did before 2012 when they expanded their majority in the US House of Representatives. Here are this year’s results for states whose legislators draw the boundaries of Congress, as well as results for all 11 gubernatorial races this year, according to NCSL data:
