It has been a season to forget for IPL’s most consistent team, Chennai Super Kings. They are already out of the race for the play-offs, the first time they have not made it past the group stage. While the team has failed to muster a string of victories this season, several experts believe the main reason behind this has been the franchise’s inability to bring youngsters into the team.
CSK are the oldest team at IPL 2020, in terms of average age and their policy of relying on their experienced hands seems to have gone too far in the season. Add to that the fact that their influential captain MS Dhoni, playing competitive cricket after more than a year, has not been able to find his way with the bat and CSK has been hurt badly.

Former West Indies legend Brian Lara, who has appeared as an insider for host broadcaster Star Sports, revealed what he believes to be the main reason behind CSK’s poor show this season.
“I think (CSK) has a lot of older players. There are no young players coming into the lineup. Look at it. Even its players abroad have been around for a long time. So they have endorsed the youth experience, and this has really turned them upside down. It’s just an amazing season so far, ”Lara said while speaking on Star Sports Select Dugout.

“You know, every time they show up, we have high hopes that CSK will change it. We know that 3-4 games ago they were in a situation where they had to start winning. We all came here thinking that this would be the time for Dhoni to turn things around with his team. And game after game, it just happened, and they kept waiting. But it is a situation in which they can try to build from next year. In the few games you have to come, see what you can do with the youngest players you have, “he added.
CSK is out of the race for the play-offs, but it can surely spoil the party for others. They beat the high-flying RCB in their last outing and will now face the Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday, a team desperately in need of a win to stay in search of a play-off berth.
