Four men were arrested on charges of sexually abusing a local singer in the village of Nischintapur near the border with Bangladesh in Tripura’s western district, police said on Thursday.
According to the 26-year-old woman’s complaint, she had gone to the town just 5 km from Agartala, on Tuesday towards Durga puja where she met a man she knew. While she was returning with him on his motorcycle, he allegedly abused her. After she started crying, some locals came there but harassed her and shot the incident on their mobile phones.
A video of the incident later went viral on social media where a man is seen twisting her arm from behind and touching her inappropriately while other people are seen abusing her, taking pictures and filming videos of her along with the man with him. returning.
Later, a local person accompanied her to her home.
The singer filed a complaint against Sanjib Barman, the man she was returning with on the motorcycle on Wednesday. Based on his complaint, the police arrested him later that night at his home in Agartala. Around midnight, three others who had abused were also arrested.
“The process of identifying the people in the video clip is underway. We will arrest them as soon as they are identified, ”said Amtali Subdivision Police Officer Anirban Das.
Police did not say whether the other three men arrested were seen on the video.
The assault on the singer has sparked outrage in the state. Numerous social and cultural organizations condemned the incident and demanded the arrest and strict action against the people who abused it.
