The southwest monsoon has retreated; Northeast monsoon has started: IMD

Monzón pulled out of the country on Wednesday (October 28) after a 13-day delay, compared to October 15, its normal deadline.

The country registered 7% excess rainfall between October 1 and 28.

There is a significant reduction in rainfall activity in most parts of the country, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to announce the withdrawal of the monsoon.

Although IMD had announced the end of the monsoon season on September 30, the rains continued even after the deadline.

The northeastern monsoon, which brings rains across southern India, hit the southern tip of the peninsula on Wednesday.

A cyclonic circulation extends over the southwest of the Bay of Bengal off the north coast of Tamil Nadu (TN) in the lower levels of the troposphere.

Under its influence, scattered showers with moderate thunderstorms and lightning are likely to occur over Kerala, Mahe, TN and Puducherry over the next five days.

Isolated heavy rains are possible over southern TN on Thursday (Oct 29).

Dry weather conditions are likely in northwestern, western, central, and eastern India for the next four to five days.

“The withdrawal of the monsoon could not be announced earlier because widespread rains were reported from west, central and northeast India in October. That has now stopped. The southwest wind has changed direction. Now the wind is blowing northeast, ”said K Sathi Devi, director of the national weather forecast center.
