Assam police are investigating a case of a Mains Joint Entrance Test (JEE) candidate who allegedly used a power of attorney to appear on the test on his behalf during the examination conducted in September this year.
According to an FIR presented by Mitradev Sharma at the Azara Police Station in Guwahati, the candidate, who scored 99.8%, allegedly did not appear for the test conducted on September 5.
“A complaint was filed in this regard on October 23. We have set up a special investigation team to survey the complaints. The FIR alleges that the candidate used a proxy to appear in the test on his behalf, ”said Suprotiv Lal Baruah, Additional DCP (West), Guwahati.
It is alleged that the candidate had to take the test at a center located in Borjhar in the city. But after completing the biometric assistance paperwork, he walked out of the exam room with the help of the proctor and someone else appeared for the test on his behalf.
“The matter came to light after the candidate allegedly admitted this during a telephone call, which was recorded. So far, we have not encountered any other cases of misrepresentation during testing, ”said Baruah.
Police contacted the National Testing Agency, which conducts testing across the country, and sought out data related to JEE Mains to assist them in their investigation.
“The candidate who was out of state since the presentation of the FIR has been in our custody since Wednesday afternoon and is being questioned. Most likely he will be arrested soon, ”added Baruah.
The author has alleged that the candidate’s parents, both practicing doctors, had paid a sum of Rs 15-20 lakhs to a private training institute in Guwahati to assist the candidate in the crime.
