The Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi, Professor Yogesh Tyagi, was suspended by order of the president, Ministry of Education officials said on Wednesday. Tyagi’s suspension by the president comes amid a heated dispute for power amid two sections of the university over recent decisions on crucial appointments made by the VC and its adherence to university regulations.
The orders issued by VC Tyagi of the now suspended varsity team during his period of absence for medical reasons will be considered null and void, officials told the PTI news agency.
President Ram Nath Kovind, who is the visitor to the university, had sent his approval for the suspension of the VC on Tuesday.
The order further states that Tyagi has been on leave since July 2 when he was admitted to AIIMS under emergency medical condition. On July 17, the government had given Pro-VC PC Joshi the post of VC, until Tyagi takes office.
“The president has consented to an investigation into issues of poor governance. The Union’s education ministry has raised questions about the governance of the varsity and consent has been received. The ministry will now establish a committee to investigate the issues, ”said an official from the Ministry of Education.
The high-voltage drama has been unfolding at the University of Delhi since Tuesday with two factions of the university supporting two registrars, two vice chancellors and two South Campus directors.
