Atglen:
First lady Melania Trump came out on Tuesday to campaign for her president husband for the first time alone this year, praising him as a “fighter” and offering support to victims of the pandemic.
Trump, 50, has been a rare presence at her husband’s campaign events, but won praise for his speech at the GOP nominating convention in August.
“Donald is a fighter. He loves this country and fights for you every day,” he told the president’s supporters in Pennsylvania, a key battlefield in his duel with Joe Biden.
Her plans to hit the road with her husband last week were thwarted by a “nagging cough” from her battle with the coronavirus, which affected the first couple and their son Barron.
“Thank you for all the love and support you gave us when our family was diagnosed with Covid-19,” he said Tuesday. “We feel a lot better now.”
He offered compassion to the families of the more than 225,000 Americans who have succumbed to Covid so far this year.
“I know there are many people who have lost loved ones or know people who have been forever affected by this silent enemy,” he said.
“The thoughts and prayers of my family are with all of you during this difficult time,” Trump added. “We will triumph over this virus.”
In her speech, she offered some comments about her husband’s rabid use of Twitter.
His “Be Best” campaign, which advocates for “uplifting, positive and respectful online interactions,” according to the White House website, has often faced criticism given the strident online personality of the president himself.
“For the first time in history, the citizens of this country can hear their president directly and instantly every day through social media,” he said.
“I don’t always agree with the way he says things,” he added, laughing from the crowd.
“But it’s important to him to speak directly to the people he serves.”
