New Delhi:
A Delhi police deputy inspector has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing, stalking and making lewd comments to women. He was arrested on Saturday after complaints from at least four women. On October 17, three women in Dwarka, southwest Delhi, complained that they were harassed and sexually abused by a person in a gray Baleno between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. A fourth person also filed a similar complaint.
Four separate cases have been filed against him, including the Prevention of Sexual Offenses for Children Act (POCSO), Delhi Police said.
One of the women described the horror on video, recounting the incident that took place when she went out for a bike ride on the morning of October 17. “While riding my bike, I noticed a small, gray car that had a broken rear window. After a while, I realized that the car was being driven alongside me. I didn’t look at it. He honked at me. I gestured for him to come forward. He didn’t move forward and chased me. “
The woman said the man in the car asked her how to get to Sector-14 in Dwarka and when she was about to tell him, he unbuttoned his pants and began to touch his private parts. “I angrily asked him to leave. Then I realized that there was no one around me and that the cars were speeding by. The man in the car started saying nasty things,” she said in the video. “He didn’t stop. He continued.”
The man fled when she started screaming for help when she saw some parked vehicles.
To track down the defendant, the police examined images from 200 CCTV cameras and deployed nearly 200 police officers.
Details of 286 Balenos registered in Delhi were also tracked. However, the car used by the defendant did not have a registered number.
The defendant was finally located at his home in Janakpuri, west Delhi, on Saturday and identified as Deputy Inspector Puneet Grewal.
He was posted to the Delhi police special cell unit and is currently in judicial custody, police said.
The police officer had allegedly harassed several other women, but no First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed, police sources said, adding that more cases could be filed against him as they gather details of similar complaints.
