NEW DELHI: On Saturday, the BJP accused Congress of “selective outrage” when the saffron party questioned the main opposition’s silence on the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl from a migrant family from Bihar in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman questioned “compatible with tweets” Rahul gandhi Y Priyanka vadra and asked if the incident did not shake the conscience of the “brother-sister duo who rush to all the places that can help them politically”, referring to his visit to the relatives of the Hathras victim in UP.
Accusing Rahul and Priyanka of conducting a “political tour” to Hathras, Union minister Prakash Javadekar she questioned the lack of a similar reaction on her part to the gruesome crimes against women in Punjab and Rajasthan, where Congress is in office. “They go to places to take pictures,” he said.
Sitharaman also attacked RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, questioning whether he had asked Rahul Gandhi about the issue while conducting a joint election campaign with him in Bihar. In attacking Yadav, he referred to a 2008 news report on “allegations of teasing and misconduct” against him and his older brother Tej Pratap. “It is possible that (the Punjab incident) will not hurt RJD because that is how things were when they were in office,” Sitharaman told reporters while recounting Lalu Prasad’s ‘raj jungle’ in Bihar during 1990-2005.
Striking in Congress, he said, “Tweet-friendly Rahul Gandhi has not tweeted about the Hoshiarpur incident. There has been no outrage. And no picnic either … The Congress party should stand up and respond. This type of selective outrage Does it suit the height of the party? Why don’t the brother-sister pair express horror in Hoshiarpur? Why not in Rajasthan? The selective cry of outrage is fully exposed, ”he said, adding that crimes such as rape should not be politicized.
