A candidate from the Janta Dal Rashtravadi party was shot dead while campaigning in Bihar’s Sheohar Assembly constituency on Saturday, after which one of the attackers was lynched by supporters of the slain leader.
Police said Srinarayan Singh was campaigning with his followers in the village of Hathsar on Saturday night when four men on two bicycles started shooting at him and his followers.
While Singh died on the way to hospital, three of his supporters were seriously injured.
Police said Singh’s supporters seized one of the four attackers, a man who has been identified as one Javed, and beat him to death.
Singh, who was previously with the RJD, was running as a candidate for Janta Dal Rashtravadi, which is part of the alliance led by Upendra Kushwaha that has AIMIM and BSP members from Asaduddin Owaisi.
Munna Kumar Gupta, head of the Purnahiya Police Station, said: “We are trying to determine the motive for the incident. Prima facie, it seems like a case of personal enmity. ”On whether there could be a political angle, Gupta said it was too early to say.
Sheohar SP Anil Kumar said: “The matter is being investigated. Keeping law and order under control is the top priority ”.
The Sheohar Assembly segment is witnessing intense competition between current JD (U) MLA Sharfuddin and RJD candidate Chetan Anand Singh, son of jailed former MP Anand Mohan.
