Mumbai:
A traffic police officer was allegedly beaten by a woman after he intercepted the two-wheeled vehicle in which he was traveling without a helmet in the Kalbadevi area of South Mumbai, an official said on Saturday.
A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, generated a strong reaction from Shiv Sena’s leader, Sanjay Raut, who tweeted saying that immediate action should be taken against the woman, as it was a matter of honor for the police. from Mumbai and labeled as state minister of the interior. The incident took place on Friday afternoon at Cotton Exchange Naka in Kalbadevi, where traffic police officer Eknath Parthe intercepted the two-wheeled vehicle in which the accused woman was traveling as a passenger without a helmet, the official said.
A discussion ensued regarding the fine, during which the woman allegedly began beating the sheriff in public view, he said.
In the video, the woman is seen claiming that the bailiff had verbally abused her, while the latter is seen refuting her accusation.
Even while Mr. Parthe was being attacked, a crowd gathered at the scene and some passersby were seen firing the assault on their mobile phones.
Later, female police officers arrived at the scene and the accused identified as Sadvika Ramakant Tiwari (30) and his partner Mohsin Khan (26) were taken to the Lokmanya Tilak Marg police station, the official said.
A crime has been registered under section 353 (assaulting a public servant) and other relevant provisions of the IPC against the duo, who were arrested, he said.
Meanwhile, the traffic police in an official statement said that Parthe had not used foul language and had addressed both defendants in a polite manner.
Joint Police Commissioner (Traffic) Yashasvi Yadav praised the bailiff for not losing his temper and being patient, as the accused woman beat and abused him, according to the statement.
