The Super Kings are currently at the bottom of the points table.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are having a disastrous streak on the course Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The three-time champions have played 11 matches so far in the competition and have registered victory in only three games. As a result, they are sitting last on the points table. On Friday, they even faced defeat in their reverse match against Mumbai Indians (MI) through 10 windows.
Batting first, CSK could only post 114/9 in his allotted 20 overs, thanks to a valiant hit of Sam curran, who scored 52 of 47 balls with the help of six limits.
Apart from Curran, no other CSK hitter could even cross the 20-run mark. The tallest racer after the English off-roader was skipper MS Dhoni with 16 runs.
In response, the defending champions chased down the insignificant target without missing a single wicket. While Quinton de Kock did 46 not out, Ishan kishan broke an undefeated 68 in 37 deliveries.
Here’s how CSK can still qualify for the playoffs
Practically, it seems impossible for CSK to continue in the top 4, but mathematically there are some chances that the ‘Yellow Army’ will make the playoffs. For this, they have to win their remaining three matches. Additionally, CSK’s qualifying probability would depend on the performance of other teams in the tournament.
MS Dhoni and Co. would have to record victories in their next three matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Kolkata Knights Horsemen (KKR) Y Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). Along with victories in these three games, CSK must also maintain a good margin to improve its net run rate compared to other teams.
The equation with respect to other teams suggests that MI and Capitals of Delhi (DC), must finish with 18-22 points, while RCB will finish in third position in the standings with 16-20 points.
Similary, Royals of Rajasthan (RR), Sunrises Hyderabad (SRH) and KXIP should only win one match out of their remaining matches in the league phase. These three teams currently rank seventh, fifth and sixth in the standings with eight points each.
At the same time, KKR should finish its journey through the league stage in fifth place in the standings with 12 points.
