New Delhi: Shortly after the reopening of liquor stores in the country, the Delhi government decided to collect a crown on liquor. According to sources, there will be a 70% increase in liquor prices starting tomorrow in the national capital.
Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, according to media reports, that the liquor stores will remain open in the national capital from 9 a.m. at 6:30 p.m.
On Monday, the Delhi Special Tax Commissioner wrote to the Delhi Police Commissioner, saying ‘instructions can be transmitted to field officials that the liquor stores of 4 government corporations according to the list they finalized in accordance with the order of This department must operate from 9 AM to 6:30 PM.

Earlier in the day, the Minister of Health, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, had advised the Delhi government to reconsider its decision to open liquor stores, as the national capital currently remains under the ‘red’ zone.
“It would not be correct and wise to proceed with a decision, made knowingly or unknowingly, as its adverse effects have already become apparent. The Delhi government should review its decision,” Vardhan said.
Meanwhile, Delhi BJP leaders had also urged the AAP government to resume its decision. Opposition leader in the Delhi Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor also criticized the Kejriwal government’s decision to open liquor stores in the city.
Dozens of people ignore the rules of social distancing
Hours after liquor stores opened at various locations across the country on Monday, dozens of people were seen lining up outside stores. Some people were also seen circumventing the rules of social distancing, leading authorities to close them hours after it was opened.
Haryana also considers raising ‘corona cess’
On Sunday, it was reported that the Haryana government was also mulling over the decision to collect ‘Covid cess’ on alcohol to build a war chest to deal with the virus. Haryana’s deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala said the measure will help the state support areas or institutions negatively affected by the coronavirus outbreak.
