Chinese soldier captured in Ladakh

NEW DELHI A Chinese soldier was captured near the Demchok area in Ladakh early Monday after he crossed the border of the Royal Line of Control, the Indian army said, amid heightened tensions between India and China.

The Chinese soldier has been identified as Corporal Wang Ya Long by the Indian army.

“The PLA (People’s Liberation Army) soldier has received medical assistance that includes oxygen, food and warm clothing to protect him from the vagaries of extreme altitude and harsh weather conditions,” the statement said.

A request was received from the Chinese army seeking information on the whereabouts of the missing soldier, he said, adding: “In accordance with established protocols, he will be returned to Chinese officials at the Chushul-Moldo meeting point after completion. of the modalities. “

The news of the capture of the Chinese soldier, about 300 km south of Pangong Lake, caused quite a stir as it comes amid unprecedented tensions between the two countries.

“As far as I know, a Chinese soldier was detained by the Indian side, most likely because he got lost. (The) Indian side has a positive attitude. The soldier will be returned to China. The problem should not cause new tensions in the border area, “Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the China state-backed Global Times, said on Twitter.

Tensions between India and China have risen since May, when India detected multiple intrusions into Indian territory by the Chinese. Tensions erupted into a violent clash on June 15 with 20 Indian soldiers and an unknown number of Chinese soldiers killed.

Many rounds of talks at the military and diplomatic level have failed to guarantee a decrease in tensions, seen to levels that can be described as unprecedented in decades.
