At least four people were injured and some huts and small tents were burned as a territorial dispute between Assam and Mizoram residents escalated Saturday night, with both states approaching the Center over the issue.
The incident occurred between residents of Lailapur village in Assam’s Cachar district and residents of towns near Vairengte in Mizoram’s Kolasib district. “The issue has been discussed with the Government of India. Hopefully it should be resolved soon. The special DGP (Border) has been recommended to visit the affected area, ”Singh, GP of ADGP (L&O) of Assam, told The Indian Express.
Mizoram held an emergency cabinet meeting on the issue on Sunday. “I sincerely request everyone to keep the peace and kindly not to circumvent any administrative procedures,” Mizoram’s Chief Minister Zoramthanga tweeted.
H Lalthangliana, the DC of Mizoram’s Kolasib district, said three people were injured on Mizoram’s side, one of them in critical condition and under treatment at a hospital.

Narrating the sequence of events, Lalthangliana told The Indian Express: “The people of Lailapur came and threw stones at Mizoram police personnel deployed near the border and nearby residents. In turn, the residents of Mizoram mobilized and went after them. There is no clear line indicating the Assam-Mizoram border in some areas. According to an agreement between the Assam and Mizoram governments a few years ago, the status quo must be maintained in “no man’s land” in the border area. However, the people of Lailapur broke the status quo and supposedly built some temporary huts. People from Mizoram’s side went and set them on fire. “
BL Meena, the SP for the Cachar district of Assam, said things were under control. “There is tension at the moment, but things are under control. One person was injured on the Assam side. There have been no victims, but false news about it is circulating on social media, ”Meena said, confirming the burning of huts and temporary tents.
The violence in Kolasib and Cachar comes about a week after a similar brawl on the Assam-Mizoram border between the Karimganj (Assam) and Mamit (Mizoram) districts.
Anbamuthan MP Karimganj DC said: “Yes, there were problems but there is no emerging violent situation as of now. We speak with the other side and we are in contact with all the officials. We have reduced the situation. “
“It is a problem related to the territory. The people of Mizoram had claimed that historically they had cultivated a certain piece of land, but according to the documents, it is located in the Karimganj territory, ”Anbamuthan explained.
During a meeting on October 14, Mamit DC Lalrozama told his counterpart Anbamuthan that the land contested by Assam had been cultivated “without problems” by the residents of Mizoram for a long time. He suggested that the status quo now be maintained in the same way.
On October 9, a John Zolawma hut and a Ben David betel nut plantation were burned and destroyed in the border area. Lalrozama has urged the Karimganj district administration to identify the perpetrators and take appropriate legal action against them.
Meanwhile, a bureaucratic The fight is between Mizoram and Tripura over Phuldungsei, a small town in the Jampui Hills on the interstate border. Mizoram has imposed prohibition orders under Section 144 of the CrPC on public movement in the area, while Tripura has reacted strongly to the order, claiming that Phuldungsei was an integral part of the state.
