KALABURAGI: The flood situation remained bleak Sunday in four districts of Karnataka With the Krishna and Bhima rivers flooded by the army, national and state disaster response forces undertook rescue work, evacuating hundreds of abandoned people, authorities said.
Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said that many villages in Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Yadgir and Raichur districts were totally or partially submerged due to flooding caused by heavy rains last week and that he would conduct an aerial survey of the affected areas on October 21.
According to the Karnataka Disaster Management Authority (KDMA), a total of 20,269 people, including 15,078 in Kalaburgi, the disaster-affected area, have so far been evacuated by Army personnel, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) in addition to local police and district authorities.
There was no loss of human life anywhere in the flood-affected areas, while two head of cattle died in Vijayapura, KDMA Commissioner Manoj Rajan said.
A total of 111 villages in the four districts have been affected by the floods, triggered by heavy rains and water released by dams in neighboring Maharashtra.
“Two NDRF, one SDRF and one Army column have been deployed to Kalaburagi while two Indian Air Force The helicopters are on standby. Similarly, NDRF and Army personnel are deployed in three other districts. The situation is under control, “Rajan told PTI.
Yediyurappa said the floods have also caused damage to crops.
“Under the given circumstances, it has become necessary to conduct an aerial reconnaissance to understand the real situation. In this context, I will conduct an aerial reconnaissance of Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur and Vijayapura on October 21,” he said at a launch in Bengaluru.
Authorities said the Bhima River continued to grow in Kalaburagi, Vijayapura and Yadgir districts, while the Krishna River affected the villages of Raichur.
Bhima, Krishna’s main tributary, has been on a roll for the past week due to torrential rains in neighboring Maharashtra and parts of Karnataka.
The river flowed 4.45 meters above the danger level and 1.61 meters above the previous highest flood level. the Central Water Commission in its last update.
According to the KDMA, up to 55 villages in six Kalaburagi taluks, thirteen villages in three Yadgir taluks and 26 Vijayapura villages were severely affected by the floods.
The authority said it has also identified 157 villages in Kalaburagi, 45 villages in Yadgir and 26 villages in Vijayapura as vulnerable.
Expressing solidarity with the people affected by the floods, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the state of all the cooperations of the Center.
This is the third time the state has been hit by flooding in the past three months after heavy monsoon rains.
