Active Covid Cases in Tamil Nadu Could Soon Drop Below 40,000 | Chennai News


CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu added 4,295 new cases and 57 deaths to its Covid-19 registry on Saturday bringing the case count to 6,83,486 and the number of victims to 10,586. The number of active cases, however, is approaching the 40,000 mark with 5,005 discharges in the last 24 hours, bringing the number to 40,192.
Officials say that by early next week, if new cases continue to decline, active cases in the state will drop below 40,000.
The 11 northern districts together reported 51% of new cases and 56% of deaths on Saturday. The area also had the highest number of active patients (21,088). After northern TN, new cases were highest in the eight western districts (1,273) followed by the central area (418). New cases in the 10 southern districts (386) fell below the 400 mark.
On Saturday, although all districts reported new cases, the numbers were above 200 in only four. Hotspot Chennai (1,132) was the only district to report more than 1,000 new cases. Chennai was followed by Coimbatore (389) and Salem (240). With just eight cases, Perambalur reported the fewest number of cases. It also had the fewest active cases at 78.
Chennai (15) also topped the table in terms of deaths, followed by Coimbatore (6), Chengalpet (5) and Vellore (4). Dharmapuri and Salem had three deaths each. Sixteen districts reported zero deaths. Active cases in Chennai fell to 12,907 from 13,289 on Friday. The number of active cases exceeded the four-digit mark in the districts of Coimbatore (3,861), Salem (2,127), Chengalpet (1,860), Tiruvallur (1,465), Tiruppur (1,166), Erode (1,060) and Cuddalore (1,047) .
