BENGALURU: Six days after the body of a missing person girl was recovered in Magadi taluk, the police arrested her on Friday father, 48, and two cousins accused of murdering her for falling in love with a 20-year-old Dalit farmer. The family tried to cover it up by filing a fault complaint.
The defendants are Krishnappa, a farmer, his nephews Chetan alias Yogi, 21, and a 17-year-old boy. They are residents of the village of Bettahalli, near Magadi, 55 km from Bangalore. Krishnappa filed a complaint with the Kudur police on 9 October that his only daughter Hemalatha, 18, a student at BCom, disappeared the day before.

Later, he told police that he learned of his presence in a mango orchard near the town. His decomposed body was found in a well dug to plant saplings on October 10.
Krishnappa accused Hemalatha’s boyfriend, Puneeth, of the murder, but the police found him innocent. They picked up Krishnappa for questioning after they found his suspicious behavior. “He confessed to the crime and said that two nephews helped him kill Hemalatha,” said a police officer.
Krishnappa and his nephews became angry with Hemalatha after learning that she was in love with a young Dalit. “The trio took her to the grove and broke her head with a stone. They threw the body into the well and covered it with mud. Later, Krishnappa claimed to have found the body after a villager heard screams from the grove, ”the officer said.
