Two gunmen shot and killed Balwinder Singh Bhikhiwind, a Shaurya Chakra recipient, in Bhikhiwind, 35 km from here, on Friday.

Balwinder, 62, who had left leanings, had for years fought valiantly against terrorism and was repeatedly attacked by militants in the terror-infested area. He had even erected bunkers on the roof of his house.

According to the information, as soon as Balwinder opened the door of the school that he used to run, the men who were waiting for him shot him. He received five bullets in total and was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared that he had been taken dead.

SP (Operations) Jagjit Singh Walia said the attackers arrived in a four-wheeler, while others claimed they were riding a motorcycle.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by DIG Ferozepur to investigate all angles of the fatal attack on Shaurya Chakra-awarded Comrade Balwinder Singh. The SIT has already formed four special teams to solve the case and catch the accused.

Condoning Balwinder’s death, the prime minister has ordered DGP Dinkar Gupta to ensure a swift investigation to identify and bring the culprits to reserve as soon as possible. Taking note of the incident seriously, Captain Amarinder said that the investigation, to be conducted by SIT, will take into account all possibilities. Anyone found guilty of the murder will be treated strictly, he added.

Balwinder’s was an example of how some people fought against terrorism inside Punjab. He even trained his children for this. His exploits reached the international media, including National Geographic.
