IPL 2020: It takes years to build a legacy, but a minute to destroy it, says Gautam Gambhir

Former Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir, who led the franchise to two titles in 2012 and 2014, posted a cryptic message on Friday moments after news of the KKR captaincy change was announced.

England’s World Cup winning captain, Eoin Morgan, took over as KKR captaincy from Dinesh Karthik.

Moments later, Gambhir took to Twitter to say: “It takes years to build a legacy, but a minute to destroy it.”

Although he had not tagged anyone or said so in response to any other post, the most obvious reference was to the KKR captaincy change, as the post was placed moments after the team formally announced the change.

Dinesh Karthik has led KKR in 7 games at IPL 2020, of which they won four and lost three and placed fourth on the IPL 2020 points table.

“We are fortunate to have leaders like DK, who has always put the team first. It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to make a decision like this. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes.

“We are also fortunate that Eoin Morgan, the 2019 World Cup winning captain, who has been the vice captain, is willing to lead the team in the future.

“DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin assumes the role of captain, this is effectively a role swap and we hope this transition will go smoothly,” said Venky Mysore, CEO of KKR.

“On behalf of everyone at Kolkata Knight Riders, we thank DK for all of his contributions as captain over the past two and a half years and wish Eoin the best in the future,” added Mysore.

Fans had been calling for Karthik’s removal

Calls have grown louder on social media and within the cricket fraternity for Eoin Morgan to take over as captaincy from Dinesh Karthik, who has come under fire for some of his decisions this season.

Karthik has led KKR in 37 games since 2018, in which they won 19 and lost 17. KKR had qualified for the playoffs in DK’s debut season with the team as the skipper, finishing third in 2018 but failed to reach the knockouts last year after finishing fifth. in the league stage.

However, in their final match on Monday, KKR were beaten by Royal Challengers Bangalore for 82 runs and Karthik came under severe criticism after the match.
