With its daily case count starting to rise again, Delhi has regained the number one position among cities with the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country.
On Thursday, Delhi registered nearly 3,500 new cases to bring its total number of infected people so far to 3.21 lakh. In the process, it surpassed Pune, which had been bearing the peak load of infected people for the past month and a half.
After reporting more than 5,000 cases a day on a few occasions in late August and early September, Pune has seen its daily numbers steadily decline in the last month. During the past three days, it has reported fewer than 1,500 new cases per day.
Delhi, on the other hand, slowed down considerably in June and July, then saw its numbers spike once again in September, before entering another phase of decline. But their numbers have risen again in the last three days, when, after an interval of almost two weeks, the new daily infections have been more than 3,000. 📣 Click to follow Express Explained on Telegram
Meanwhile, Bengaluru has been growing at a very fast rate in the last two weeks. On three occasions during this period, the city reported more than 5,000 cases in one day. Delhi has never passed the 4,500 mark. Bengaluru has fueled the rise of Karnataka, which is the second fastest growing state in the country at the moment, after Kerala. At various times in the last three weeks, Karnataka has reported more than 10,000 cases a day.
With more than 2.97 lakh cases, Bengaluru is set to hit three lakhs on Friday. On Thursday, it reported almost 3,800 cases while a day before, more than 4,500 new cases were found in the city. At this rate, Bangalore has the potential to surpass even Pune and Delhi in a couple of weeks. It has been steadily closing the gap with these two cities in recent weeks.
Both Kerala and Karnataka are showing signs of slowing down after three weeks of very fast growth. Although the two states remain the largest contributor of cases in the country after Maharashtra, they are both off their peaks that were achieved a few days ago. Their growth rates have also declined significantly, although, again, they continue to be the fastest growing states at this time.
Karnataka has so far recorded 7.44 lakhs of infections, while Kerala, with 3.18 lakhs of infections as of Thursday, appears poised to overtake Delhi on Friday and become the state with the sixth highest number of cases in the country.
Just over 63,000 new cases were discovered on Thursday, about 4,000 fewer than the day before. So far, more than 73.7 lakh people have been infected with the virus in the country, of which more than 64.5 lakh, or about 88 percent, have recovered from the disease. More than 70,000 people were declared to have recovered on Thursday, making it the 13th day in a row that recoveries have exceeded new cases.
Nearly 900 coronavirus-related deaths were reported Thursday, indicating that the abnormally low count of 680 deaths on Wednesday was likely an aberration. The total death count now exceeds 1.12 lakh.
