NEW DELHI: The government is likely to decide to review the minimum age of marriage for girls after receiving a report from a committee created for this purpose.
“Important deliberation is underway to decide what the ideal marriage age should be for daughters,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said while addressing a video conference after launching a commemorative 75 rupee coin on the 75th anniversary of Food and Agriculture. Organization (FAO).
The prime minister said he has been receiving letters from women across the country, asking about the committee’s report and when the government will make a decision on it.
“I want to assure you that the government will make its decision soon after the presentation of the report,” Modi said.
In his Independence Day speech, the prime minister announced that the government was deliberating what the minimum age of marriage should be for women and established a committee to investigate the matter.
Currently, the minimum age for marriage is 18 for women and 21 for men.
Experts suggest that the minimum age for girls to marry should be raised to 21, as 18 is not the perfect time for a girl to get married and have children.
