OnePlus 8T only has one reason to exist: Warp Charge 65

For years, OnePlus phones have offered cool new features, affordable prices, and more. For 2020, that has changed a bit. The OnePlus 8 series was significantly more expensive, but it did eventually bring some much-needed enhancements. Now, we have the OnePlus 8T, a redesigned and slightly improved version of this year’s less exciting phone.

The OnePlus 8T has been my main smartphone for the past few days and, getting straight to the point, I don’t think there is much to say about it. It’s a really good phone, just like the OnePlus 8. It’s fast, has a great spec package, and is relatively affordable in a world of overpriced flagships. It also has a nice design that, although it’s a bit of a derivative of Samsung’s Galaxy S20, it looks good!

Honestly, I have nothing to complain about with the OnePlus 8T, at least from my first impressions. The camera seems slightly improved over the 8 (examples below) and the battery life is solid too. OxygenOS 11 also throttles with this hardware, which I really enjoyed.

My problem with this phone? Honestly, it doesn’t have many reasons to exist. It has essentially the same hardware as the OnePlus 8, only with countless hours spent redesigning its case. There’s no noticeable spec increase here, just an updated camera sensor and a slightly faster refresh rate on the screen. That screen is flat this time too, which I undoubtedly love compared to the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8T.

the only However, the clear reason OnePlus has to release this phone is Warp Charge 65. The company’s new charging standard is ridiculously fast with a full charge priced in just 39 minutes. However, in my tests, I often found the 8T hitting that estimate for a couple of minutes. Generally, plugging it in at 1% leaves the recharge estimate in about 36-37 minutes. In any case, it is incredibly fast.

With the new standard too, OnePlus ditched the USB-A to USB-C cable that it has been using for years. Finally! C to C! This means that you can also use that block with a laptop or tablet that supports USB-C. It’s a win-win and something OnePlus was long overdue for. I think it’s a shame that wireless charging is not included. Incredibly fast speeds are nice, sure, but they don’t change the minor frustration of trying to plug a phone into power in a dark room while falling asleep.

The OnePlus 8T is, again, a really good phone. It does pretty much everything right, and for people who value ridiculously fast loading, $ 749 is an incredible value, especially given the extra storage and RAM. However, I think most people would have been better served if OnePlus had kept its focus on the OnePlus 8 series and saved Warp Charge 65 for OnePlus 9. Instead, the company has simply other phone to keep that doesn’t really justify existence in the first place.
