Flooded roads, submerged vehicles, cars swept away due to strong currents, streams and other avalanche bodies of water: these were some of the images that continued to come from Hyderabad as torrential rains hit the city and various parts of Telangana. Twelve people have died in Telangana in incidents related to the rain, including eight who were killed Tuesday night when a rock crashed into two houses in the Bandlaguda area of Hyderabad.
A video that has gone viral shows a man being washed away by flooding on a street near the Falaknuma area of Hyderabad. He tries to hold onto a street light pole but fails due to strong currents. Overflowing tanks and lakes caused water to enter houses in low-lying areas. Vehicles were swept away and the power supply was broken in several locations. Follow the updates LIVE
The NDRF and SDRF teams were put into service to evacuate people living in low-lying areas. In the Nadeem colony of Toli Chowki, NDRF teams rescued more than 600 people from 170 households using boats.
The 24-hour rainfall ending Wednesday at 8.30am in Hyderabad was 191.8mm – the highest reported October precipitation in the city since 1903. Meanwhile, electrical storms accompanied by lightning are very likely to occur in isolated locations over Telangana. Heavy or very heavy rains are highly likely to occur in isolated locations over Telangana, IMD has predicted.
