Eleven-seat Rajya Sabha polls in UP, Uttarakhand on November 9


Elections for 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and one in Uttarakhand, which will become vacant next month, will take place on November 9, a press release issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Tuesday.

October 27 is the last date to submit nominations and November 2 is the last day to withdraw the candidacy.

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the EC said concerned key secretaries should ensure that a senior state official is delegated to ensure all coronavirus guidelines are followed.

Everyone must wear a mask at all times, a thermal scan must be carried out at the entrance and exit doors, disinfectants must be available in all places, the EC said in its statement. Social distancing rules must also be adhered to, the statement added.

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav are among 10 members from Uttar Pradesh who will retire on November 25. Actor and politician Raj Babbar’s term as a member of Uttarakhand’s Rajya Sabha also ends on November 25.

The vote counting will take place on November 9 from 5:00 p.m. The call for the elections will be issued on October 20, according to the press release.
