Apple’s unprecedented second event ushered in the iPhone 12 series, Cupertino’s first 5G phones, at least a couple of years after Samsung launched its first device that is powered by next-generation telecommunications technology. But then Apple is going crazy with 5G, with all four phones featuring the new technology running on more than 100 networks around the world, not including India.
At the virtual event broadcast from the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park, CEO Tim Cook introduced Apple’s first 5G phone, the iPhone 12, with a 6.1-inch screen. The phone is thinner, lighter and smaller than ever. At the end of the event, Apple reiterated that the iPhone, without a suffix, is now the company’s base model.
The iPhone 12 has a Ceramic Shield to protect the OLED screen; Apple says this is the toughest smartphone glass of all time. The phones are powered by Apple’s new A14 Bionic, which was first seen on the iPad Air launched last month and the first to be built using 5nm technology. The iPhone 12 will have a dual camera setup, an ultra-wide camera and a wide camera with seven lenses.
But this is the foundation on which Apple wants to build. And you know there is still value in offering a smaller phone, even a lighter phone. That’s where the iPhone 12 Mini will come in, with the same guts but a smaller 5.4-inch screen.
These two phones, with prices starting at Rs 69,990 and Rs 79,990, will be the ones to generate volumes around the world this Christmas season, especially given lower disposable income and negative consumer sentiments.
And this could also be the reason why the Pro suffix will now clearly mean that the higher-end versions will offer pro-level features, especially when it comes to photo and video capabilities. While the iPhone 12 Pro will have a larger 6.1-inch screen and the iPhone 12 Pro Max a 6.7-inch screen, both will add an additional 52mm telephoto lens as well.
Both phones will try to build on Apple’s computational photography learnings from last year, but will stand out as the only phones that can record Dolby Vision video and edit it on the phone, without losing quality. Additionally, the LIDAR scanner that Apple introduced on the iPad Pro will also be coming to these phones. The iPhone 12 Pro will have a starting price of Rs 119,900 and the iPhone 12 Pro Max Rs 129,900.
Interestingly, Apple also introduced a new MagSafe technology to improve wireless charging on its phones. New technology allows the charger and some other accessories to be magnetically attached to new phones.
HomePod Mini to take on Echo
Cupertino is also opening a front with Amazon with its HomePod Mini, Apple’s new smallest smart speaker that promises a 360-degree audio experience. The HomePod Mini works with Siri and is more integrated with the iPhone than the older and larger HomePod. Plays a large amount of phone content on the speaker while helping to control smart home functions using the Home app. There is also an innovative intercom function that will play a message on the devices of all family members, allowing them to respond using Siri. But it’s the HomePod Mini’s price, Rs 9,900 in India, that will put it squarely against the Amazon Echo in most markets.
