A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a Jhansi university student on campus on Sunday while conducting the Uttar Pradesh provincial civil services (PCS) 2020 preliminary examination, police said.
The girl, a class 10 student, alleged in her complaint that around a dozen university students forcibly took her onto campus, where one of them outraged her modesty while others made an objectionable video and robbed her 2,000 rupees. In addition, he alleged that they even beat the boy he had come to meet. She also alleged that the students also threatened to make the video viral if she revealed the incident to someone.
Dinesh Kumar P, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jhansi, said that eight students, including the two main defendants, Rohit Saini and Bharat Kushwaha, were arrested in connection with the incident. Further investigations were underway and if the names of other students came up in the crime, action will also be taken against them, the SSP added.
The presence of the victim inside the exam center is still under investigation. She alleges that she was forced to enter through an unguarded door. The center had only one guard and he was involved in the examination process.
“Some policemen heard the screams of the girl and took her to the Sipri Bazaar police station where she recounted her ordeal to the police. She identified one of the accused as Bharat, ”said the SSP.
“The police have registered an FIR under various Sections 376D [charge convict with gang rape], 395 [dacoity], 386 [extortion], 323 [causing hurt] and 120B [criminal conspiracy] of the Indian Penal Code and section 66D of the TI Act and section 3/4 of the POCSO Act in which Rohit Saini and Bharat Kushwaha were named. In addition to the named defendants, the police also arrested Shailendra Nath Pathak, Mayank Shivhare, Vipin Tiwari, Monu Parya, Dharmendra Sen and Sanjay Kushwaha, ”added the SSP.
Meanwhile, the girl was sent for a medical examination, he said.
Jhansi District Magistrate Andhra Vamsi said the Sipri Bazaar police had been instructed to submit the charge sheet as soon as possible and for the case to be tried in a fast track court. He also said that psychological help had been arranged for the victim to help her overcome the trauma.
The university director said the defendants were second-year students and that the institute was cooperating with police to establish the identities of other students involved in the incident.
