Bangalore, Oct 11: Karnataka’s Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday ordered a three-week mid-term holiday for all kinds of school activities in the state from October 12 to 30 in the wake of many teachers contracting the coronavirus.

“I have come to know through the media that many teachers contract the COVID-19 infection, so, taking into account the health of teachers and students, I have directed senior officials to issue an order declaring vacation mid-term for three weeks from October 12 to 30, “Yediyurappa said in a statement.

The Chief Minister noted that in the context of COVID-19 infections, orders have already been issued not to open schools for the time being and to halt the Vidyagama program, which allowed public school teachers to continue to school students who they visited its surroundings.

The government had earlier this month canceled the midterm vacation, scheduled for Oct.3-26, for state schools for 2020-21.

He said he would continue the Vidyagama program for public school students and online classes in private schools.

Earlier today, JD (S) leader and former chief minister HD Kumraswamy in a series of tweets criticized the state government’s decision to cancel the mid-term vacation and asked “if teachers were salaried workers during the dictatorship? ? “

School reopening: many states are unsure, but have yet to decide in light of the COVID-19 situation

Following reports that 34 students and some teachers tested positive for COVID-19, the state government decided on Saturday to temporarily halt the Vidyagama program.

Amid intense debate over the reopening of schools in Karnataka, Yediyurappa on Friday asked parents of children not to pay attention to speculation about it, assuring them that a decision will only be made after weighing the pros and cons. .

Stating that with the health and future of children in mind, a meeting of all the leaders of all political parties, experts and senior officials will be held to discuss the pros and cons of reopening schools, he had said: “Until then, I ask parents to ignore rumors or speculations about the reopening of schools, and the media to raise awareness about it.”
