Coronavirus cases in India exceed 70 Lakh, more than 60 Lakh have recovered

India has crossed the historic 60 lakh milestone of recoveries from the novel coronavirus, data from the Health Ministry showed this morning. Meanwhile, the country’s coronavirus cases surpassed the 70 lakh mark, bringing it ever closer to surpassing the United States as the most infected country in the world. With 74,383 new infections, India’s Covid count is now 70,53,806. In the 24-hour period, India, which is the second most affected country, reported 918 deaths related to the virus, bringing the total number of deaths to 1.08,334.

  1. Maharashtra and four southern states – Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu – reported the most cases, according to the data. “The top five states with the highest case load (61% of active cases) also contribute more than half (54.3%) of total recoveries,” the Health Ministry said in a tweet this morning.

  2. Kerala added 11,755 cases, the majority in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry. The southern state, which had announced it had flattened the COVID-19 curve in May, has been reporting around 10,000 cases since October. The National Center for Disease Control has warned that the national capital can see 15,000 cases daily during the winter.

  5. In Bengal, veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee, who is currently in intensive care for complications due to Covid-19, underwent plasma therapy at a private hospital in Kolkata. Chatterjee, one of Bengal’s most revered actors, tested positive on Monday.

  6. The virus initially affected major metropolises such as Mumbai and New Delhi, but has since spread to remote parts of the country, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

  7. The daily number of new cases has fallen from a peak of almost 100,000 in mid-September to around 60,000-70,000. India’s ever-increasing recovery rate and the progressive decline in active cases have demonstrated the success of the Center-led COVID-19 containment strategy, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said recently.

  8. India’s COVID-19 count had crossed the 20 lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, and 40 lakh on September 5. It went from 50 lakh on September 16 and crossed 60 lakh on September 28.

  9. India remains the second nation most affected by the coronavirus pandemic, only after the United States, where the Covid count is approximately 76 lakh with more than 2 lakh deaths. The United States hit a two-month high on Friday with more than 58,000 new coronavirus infections. Ten of the 50 states, including the Midwestern states of Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri and Ohio, reported record increases in cases in one day, according to Reuters data.

  10. The number of confirmed infections globally has been reaching daily record highs for three days in a row, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). The global total of deaths from coronavirus is 1,064,838, according to the WHO. The total number of confirmed cases is 36,754,395.
