Chandigarh:

A Haryana businessman allegedly faked his own death so his family could claim insurance, police said three days after they recovered a charred body from his car and the family told them he had been killed for Rs 11 lakh.

Police said they found the businessman, Ram Mehar, 35, alive in Chhattisgarh and are now investigating to identify the person whose body was found in the burning car in Hansi on Tuesday night.

Previously, the police had registered a case concerning the complaint of Ram Mehar’s family.

On the basis of that complaint and the recovery of the heavily charred body from the vehicle, police had said that some unidentified assailants allegedly burned the businessman to death after stealing 11 rupees in cash from him in the Hisar district of Haryana.

The incident had triggered a strong reaction from opposition parties and Congress had said there was a “jungle raj” in Haryana, ruled by the BJP.

Hansi Police Superintendent Lokender Singh told PTI on Friday: “During the course of the investigations, we obtained some vital leads on the basis of which we traced Ram Mehar to Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh on Friday. We will bring him here.”

“He fabricated his death detail and the loot incident,” he said.

When asked if the person whose body was found from inside the burning car had been identified, Singh said: “We are doing more investigations. Once Mehar, who is now a defendant, is returned, he will be questioned intensively and more facts will be done. ” arise.”

When asked why Ram Mehar could have taken such a step, Singh said: “During our investigations so far, it has come to light that he had two insurances in his name and the sum insured in one was Rs 1 crore and Rs 50 lakh in another. His family would have received the amount in case of his death. This probably seems to be the reason behind the whole incident. “

To a question, he said it has also come to light that his business was not performing well and that he could probably be in debt, but further research would shed more light on this.

Singh said he would not like to comment at this stage when asked if any family members were under the scanner in the case or how police obtained vital leads leading to the breakthrough.

He said that the police had previously filed a complaint based on the family’s statement.

“He called the family on the phone saying that some people were following his car and feared that they wanted to loot the amount he was carrying and that they could cause him harm.

“The police immediately jumped into action and we found the car on fire and a very charred body. Later, we were investigating the case from a dacoity-cum-murder angle,” he said.

On Tuesday evening, Ram Mehar, a resident of Data village on the Bhatla-Data road in Hansi, was driving home in his car.

Police had previously said that the attackers intercepted his car and then allegedly looted it and set the car on fire after locking it inside it.

The police, citing the family, had said that Ram Mehar owns a disposable cups and plates factory in Barwala and would come to Data village from Hisar after withdrawing 11 lakh rupees from a bank.
