Former governor and former CBI director Ashwani Kumar, found dead at his home in Shimla, left a note for his family attributing his decision to “illness and disability,” said Himachal Pradesh Police Chief Sanjay Kundu. Kundu, according to the ANI news agency, confirmed that the police and the family did not suspect that there had been a crime.
Kumar, the 1973 Indian Police Service officer, was found dead in the attic of his Shimla home by his son and daughter-in-law shortly after they returned from a walk around 7pm on Wednesday. The retired police officer, who once headed the Himachal Pradesh police and the Central Bureau of Investigation, left a note for his family.
“We found a suicide note in which he wrote that he was ending his life due to illness and disability, of his own free will. He said that his soul is embarking on a new journey and that everyone should be happy, and that there should be no rituals or ceremonies, ”Sanjay Kundu told reporters, according to the ANI report.
Kundu confirmed that the family did not suspect anything.
“I used to meditate in the attic around 7pm every day, with all the doors open. On Wednesday, when his son and daughter-in-law were out for a walk, they found all the loft doors closed. They broke down the door and found Kumar hanging on a rope there, ”Himachal DGP, also an IPS officer, said of the death of Kumar, 16 years his senior in service.
Ashwani Kumar was the Himachal Pradesh Police Chief from 2006 to 2008 when he returned to the Central Bureau of Investigation to head the investigative agency.
Kumar headed the central investigative agency from August 2008 to November 2010. It was during his tenure as head of the IWC that the investigative agency arrested the Union Interior Minister, Amit Shah, in the event of the encounter with Sohrabuddin Sheikh. . The 22 defendants who faced trial in this case were acquitted in December 2018.
Kumar also oversaw the agency’s investigation into Aarushi’s murder case in 2008. He had expressed his disgust at the investigation of the case and had taken it upon himself to bring it to a logical conclusion.
In 2013, the Manmohan Singh government appointed him Governor of Nagaland and Governor of Manipur. Kumar resigned after the Bharatiya Janata Party assumed power following the 2014 general elections.
