India’s Covid-19 count has crossed the 68 lakh mark with 78,524 new cases reported in the last 24 hours on Thursday. In the same period, India recorded 971 deaths. More than 11 lakh people were tested for Covid-19 on Wednesday, bringing the total number of tests performed so far to more than eight million rupees, data from the Indian Council of Medical Research revealed.
Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal, Kerala, Odisha, Telangana remain among the top 10 states with the highest number of cases.
Following the recent number of active cases versus the number of recoveries, experts have hinted that the first wave of Covid-19 appears to be receding for the first time across the country.
The seven-day average of daily cases in India reached 93,617 on Sept. 16, the highest to date. In the three weeks since, this number has dropped every day and stood at 74,623 on Wednesday, while on Thursday it rose to 78,524.
As festival season approaches, there are fears that the curve could rise again. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch an awareness campaign to promote appropriate Covid-19 behavior ahead of the upcoming holiday season and amid the reopening of the economy.
Ahead of the launch on Thursday, Prime Minister Modi tweeted several Covid-19 preventative measures. “Let’s unite to fight Corona! Always remember: wear a mask, keep your hands clean, follow social distancing, keep a distance of ‘two meters’ from others, ”he tweeted.
“India’s fight against COVID-19 is people-driven and draws great strength from our COVID warriors. Our collective efforts have helped save many lives. We have to continue the momentum and protect our citizens from the virus, ”Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
