Mumbai:

Rhea Chakraborty was granted bail almost a month after her arrest on drug-related charges in the Sushant Singh Rajput case.

A special court had yesterday extended his judicial custody until October 20.

Rhea Chakraborty was arrested on September 8 by the Office of Narcotics Control on charges of organizing drugs for Sushant Singh Rajput, a popular movie star who was found dead in her Mumbai apartment on June 14. She was charged with being “an active member of a drug syndicate” and financing drugs purchased for Sushant Singh Rajput, her boyfriend.

In her request for bail, Rhea Chakraborty alleged that Sushant Singh Rajput “took advantage of those closest to him to maintain his drug addiction” and that she and her brother are the only targets of a witch hunt.

She said he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and that his family abandoned him at the peak of his depression. Her mental health “deteriorated during the confinement,” she said, adding that the deaths of actors Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor also had a tremendous impact on her.

Sushant Singh was “extremely happy after being offered 14 million rupees for a movie,” he said, claiming that the actor was upset over a break with his family, especially his father.

Rhea Chakraborty also argued that the charges against her are too harsh compared to the amount of drugs involved. She accused the drug investigation agency of weaving a false narrative that she was involved in illegal drug trafficking and “hidden criminals.”

The CBI is investigating the circumstances of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death and the Directorate of Enforcement is investigating the financial allegations raised by the actor’s father.

The Office of Narcotics Control intervened in Sushant Singh Rajput’s investigations when WhatsApp chats retrieved from Rhea Chakraborty’s phone revealed alleged conversations related to drug procurement.

Several major players have been questioned by the drug bureau in an ever-widening investigation into drugs and the film industry.
