Two FIRs against social media accounts for defaming Mumbai police

the Mumbai Police On Tuesday they said they had registered two first reports of information under the Information Technology Act against social media account holders and fake accounts in connection with the investigation into the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, ANI reported.

While the first FIR came forward for defaming Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh and forcibly, the second was registered for using a transformed image from the police chief’s official Twitter account, said the Deputy Police Commissioner cybercell) Rashmi Karandikar.

The decision was made after a panel from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences confirmed that the actor committed suicide, ruling out all murder theories. Hours after the panel’s report, Mumbai Police Commissioner Singh said the findings vindicated them and claimed that “some vested interests” had criticized his investigation without knowing anything about it.

Rajput was found dead in his apartment in Bandra on June 14, in what Mumbai police said was a suicide case. Many opined that the Rajput was assassinated.

Police have reportedly identified more than 80,000 fake accounts created on various social media platforms to discredit them and the Maharashtra government over the ongoing investigation, according to Hindustan Times.

A police report showed that the posts on these accounts were uploaded from different countries such as Romania, Italy, Slovenia, Japan, Turkey, Poland, Slovenia, Indonesia, Thailand and France.

“We identified foreign language posts due to hashtags used such as #justiceforsushant #sushantsinghrajput and #SSR,” a senior officer from the Police Service of India told the Hindustan Times. “We are in the process of verifying more accounts.”

The police chief said the accounts were created to derail his investigation.

The campaign was carried out against the Mumbai police only to demoralize us at a time when 84 policemen had died due to the pandemic and more than 6,000 men were infected with the virus. This was a vested interest motivated campaign just to smear the image of the Mumbai police and derail our line of investigation. Several fake social media accounts were created to attack the Mumbai police with abusive tones. Our cyber cell is conducting a thorough investigation into this matter and all found violating the law will be prosecuted under the relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.

– Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh

On the AIIMS report, Singh reiterated that they had carried out the investigation “in a very professional manner.” The Shiv Sena also requested an apology on Monday from the news channels and politicians, who defamed the Mumbai police and questioned their investigation into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

The party alleged that there was a conspiracy to tarnish the image of the Maharashtra government, adding that a defamation case should be brought against those who were part of it.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had taken over the investigation of the Bihar Police in an incitement to the suicide case brought by the father of actor KK Singh in Patna against actor Rhea Chakraborty and his family.

After a drug angle emerged in the case, the Bureau of Narcotics Control arrested Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Showik Chakraborty for their alleged role in procuring drugs for the Rajputs. The agency described Rhea Chakraborty as an “active member of a drug union.” Her arrest led to the questioning of several high-profile actors, including Deepika Padukone, in an ever-widening drug investigation.

In addition to this, the Enforcement Directorate is also investigating money laundering charges in the case.
