Convicted in forage scam cases, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad has been under treatment at the main Rajendra Institute for Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Jharkhand for more than two years, longer than a patient has been in this hospital, prompting opposition. Bharatiya Janata Party to demand that Prasad be returned to jail.
The BJP has accused the head of RJD of breaking all records of hospital stay as a patient and demanded his immediate transfer to the jail hospital. On the other hand, the RJD said that the BJP suffered from Lalu phobia as a result of the Bihar elections.
The former chief minister of Bihar, who was transferred to RIMS in late August 2018, had been under treatment in the RIMS pay room until August 5, when he was transferred to the bungalow of the RIMS director, also known as Kelly’s. Bungalow, following an increase in Covid-19 cases and a shortage of beds at RIMS, hospital authorities said.
RIMS Deputy Superintendent Dr. Sanjay Kumar, when asked about the longest hospital stay for a patient, said: “According to my information, Lalu Prasad has been in treatment for more than two years, which is the longest time since any patient. ”
Although Prasad has been suffering from many illnesses, the main concern is his diabetes and ‘Type 2’ hypertension. He is a chronic kidney patient. On Prasad’s current health condition, senior physician Umesh Prasad, who is treating the head of RJD, said: “His condition is stable at the moment. However, her blood sugar fluctuated on Tuesday, ”he said.
Prior to Prasad, former state water resources minister Kamlesh Singh, facing a disproportionate asset case brought by the CBI, had undergone prolonged treatment in custody for more than a year at RIMS.
The former chief minister of Bihar has been in jail since December 23, 2017, following his conviction in the forage scam cases. After two months, he developed health complications and was transferred to RIMS and then to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. It was referred back to RIMS after AIIMS declared it fit in May 2018.
After his return to RIMS, Prasad was paroled for three days on May 10 to attend his oldest son’s wedding. Thereafter, he was extended with a provisional bond issued by the Jharkhand High Court for early treatment at a Mumbai-based hospital in June 2018. He returned to RIMS in late August 2018. Since then, he has been in treatment at RIMS. Lalu has spent only two of the 35 months since his sentence in Ranchi’s Birsa Munda prison.
Prasad has paid more than Rs 7 lakh to the RIMS administration in charge of paying for the room. RIMS administration will soon set the rate for Kelly’s Bungalow, where he is currently in treatment.
The RIMS Deputy Superintendent said: “Although the rate has not yet been finalized, we are working on a proposal that seeks a rental of Rs 5,000 per day for the bungalow. The committee will soon hold a meeting to finalize the fee and the fixed charge will be made from Prasad. ”
Jharkhand BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo said: “Prasad has broken all records for being in a hospital for the longest time. If he can be treated in the RIMS director’s bungalow, what is the problem with treating him in the jail hospital? In general, RIMS is not a super specialty hospital. In reality, Hemant Soren’s government moved him to the bungalow in view of the Bihar elections. The accommodation has now become RJD’s headquarters for the Bihar elections. ”
RJD Jharkhand President Abhay Singh said: “BJP suffers from Lalu phobia. The RJD chief respects the jail and court manuals with true spirit. In fact, BJP’s position has become weak in Bihar. So they are making illogical statements in frustration. ”
