Uttar Pradesh police arrested four people on Monday, said to have ties to the suspected radical Popular Front of India (PFI) group, for their alleged involvement in stoking violence in Hathras. Police said four PFI men were arrested in Mathura while on their way to Hathras from Delhi.

The four defendants were arrested at the Mathura toll plaza as police were searching the vehicles after receiving a tip that some suspicious people were approaching Hathras from Delhi.

All four were identified as Atiq-ur Rehman from Muzaffarnagar, Siddique from Malappuram, Masood Ahmed from Bahraich and Alam from Rampur. The police claimed that their mobile phones, laptops and some literature were seized, which could disturb the peace and stability in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the Uttar Pradesh police, the four defendants had ties to the PFI and its partner organization Campus Front of India (CFI). It should be noted that UP police had previously requested a ban on PFI for the organization’s involvement in violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
