Covid-19 cases to 7 days are the lowest in 5 weeks | India News

NEW DELHI: Covid-19 infections in India continued to decline for the third week in a row, adding to mounting evidence that the pandemic may now have passed its peak in the country, at least for now. India recorded just over 5.5 new cases during the period from September 28 to October 4, the lowest count in five weeks.
The weekly death toll from the virus followed a similar trend. The country recorded 7,143 deaths in the past seven days, the lowest in four weeks, according to data collected from state governments. This was the second consecutive week of fall after deaths peaked at 8,175 during the week of September 14-20.
The highest number of new cases registered in India during a week was 6,45,014 in the period of 7 to 13 September. This week’s count, at 5,50,545, was a 15% drop from the peak and 6.8% lower than the previous week. In absolute numbers, about 39,000 fewer cases were reported this week compared to the previous one. Last week (September 21-27), the drop was greater than almost 50,000.
Similarly, the death toll this week was 511 lower (6.6%) compared to last. The drop was similar in the previous week at 521 (6.4%). Overall, deaths fell nearly 13% this week from the peak seen two weeks earlier.
On Sunday, 77,100 new infections were recorded in the country, a slight increase from the 75,186 recorded the previous day. These are the lowest daily numbers reported on any day except Monday through the end of August. While the long weekend (Friday, Gandhi Jayanti, was a public holiday) may have helped keep the numbers down, a clearer picture of the scale of infection decline could emerge from Tuesday.
Maharashtra reported 13,702 new cases and 326 deaths on Sunday. This was the eighth consecutive day that the state had fewer than 20,000 cases. 14,348 infections were reported on Saturday. The number, however, had risen from the previous day’s count of 278. Mumbai continued to record more than 2,000 cases daily, with 2,109 on Sunday, along with 48 deaths.
However, the virus continued to rise in various parts of the country despite the overall decline. Karnataka recorded 10,145 new cases on Sunday, the third time in a week that the daily count passed the 10,000 mark. Kerala added up to 8,553 cases to its overall case count, bringing the number of active cases to 84,497 and the test’s positivity rate to 14.56%. The day also saw the highest single-day recoveries of 4,851. Among those infected were 99 health workers.
Tamil Nadu recorded 5,489 new Covid-19 cases and 66 deaths on Sunday, bringing the case count to 6,19,996 and the cumulative balance to 9,784. There are 46,120 people still in treatment for the viral infection. While all districts registered new cases, five of them had more than 200 cases each. With 1,348 cases, Chennai continued to top the table, followed by Coimbatore (474).
The Covid pandemic has shown no signs of abating in Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur. The city has reported more than 400 cases in the last seven days in a row. In the past 24 hours, the state reported 2,184 cases, bringing the overall count to 1,44,030.
