After some questions about the legality of BJP’s IT cell chief Amit Malviya sharing the identity of 19-year-old Hathras’ alleged gang rape victim who succumbed to injuries in a Delhi hospital , the head of NCW said he will send a notice to everyone shared the identity, including actor Swara Bhaskar, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, among others, once the violation is established.
“Not only Amit Malviya, but others such as Digvijaya Singh, Swara Bhaskar and many others have revealed the identity of Hathras’ victim on social media and others in Jantar Mantar,” said the director of the National Commission for Women, Rekha Sharma.
Sharma further stated that the report is not clear about the violation and the Court has also taken notice of Suo Motu. “Once it is clear, NCW will notify everyone. I have details of each and every person who puts photos on social media or on posters,” he said.
On the night of October 2, Malviya tweeted a video of the victim that read: “Haathras victim’s interaction with a journalist outside AMU, where she claimed that there was an attempt to strangle her neck.
“None of this takes away the atrocity of the crime, but it is unfair to color it and degrade the seriousness of one heinous crime against another.”
The 48-second video was long enough for many to demand action against the BJP leader for allegedly violating laws preserving the identity of victims of sexual assault.
According to the Indian penal code, it is forbidden to reveal the identity of a victim of sexual assault. But with the lawsuit for action against Malviya, the NCW has clarified, as long as it takes action against him, others like Swara Bhaskar and Digvijaya Singh will also face consequences.
The 19-year-old girl Hathras died after an alleged gang rape. She died on September 29 at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi after suffering fractures, partial paralysis and a spinal injury after the savage assault.
