A 19-year-old Dalit woman was raped by four upper-caste men in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh earlier this month. She disappeared on September 14 and her mother found her seriously injured. As details of the cases came to light, it sparked outrage across the country with opposition parties calling for Prime Minister Yogi Adityanath’s resignation.
Her death sparked mass outrage across the country with opposition leaders attacking the state government for the safety of women in Uttar Pradesh.
This is what happened after his death at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital earlier this week:
* On Monday, the Hathras woman was transferred to the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi from the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital and College of Medicine of the Muslim University of Aligarh as her condition did not improve.
* He succumbed to his injuries in Delhi hospital on Tuesday.
* After his death, the Uttar Pradesh police took the body to his home in Hathras. Police forcibly incinerated her in the dead of night, her family claimed Wednesday. The administration maintains that it was done with the consent of the family.
* The sudden cremation fueled speculation that the Yogi Adityanath government was trying to suppress information about the case. The prime minister set up a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the case on Thursday.
* On the same day, the leader of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi, together with the general secretary of the party, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and a convoy of sympathizers tried to march towards the victim’s village. Police arrested the Gandhi brothers and the convoy citing Section 144. Rahul Gandhi was manhandled by police personnel on the Yamuna Highway and they were briefly detained before being escorted back to Delhi.
* On Friday, Derek O’Brien from the Trinamool Congress and others also tried to reach Hathras. They were detained before they could reach the victim’s village. A Uttar Pradesh police team also abused O’Brien and threw him to the ground while staff tried to arrest them.
* Based on a preliminary SIT investigation report on Friday, the prime minister suspended Hathras Police Superintendent Vikrant Vir and four other police officers.
* On Saturday, the administration allowed the media to enter the town and lifted some of the restrictions imposed on Thursday.
* Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi left for Hathras on Saturday to meet the woman’s family. After being briefly detained on the Delhi-Noida border, the police finally allowed them to move on.
* After meeting the family, Priyanka Gandhi said that the woman’s relatives want a judicial investigation into the matter through the Supreme Court. The family also sought the suspension of the Hathras district magistrate, he wrote on Twitter.
* Adityanath also recommended an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the case.
