Bhim’s army chief Chandrashekhar Azad, who has been protesting the alleged gang rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras, will meet with the victim’s family in the Uttar Pradesh district on Sunday. Azad is expected to arrive in town around 12:00.
This comes a day after the leader of Congress, Rahul Gandhi, and the party’s secretary general, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, met with the woman’s family.
Azad arrived in Delhi along with supporters of his Bhim army on Thursday. Since then, he has been leading the protest in the national capital and is demanding the resignation of Uttar Pradesh Prime Minister Yogi Adityanath for handling the case.
On Saturday, Azad cited the right to live in the Constitution and requested a weapons license for the country’s disadvantaged sectors.
“Our demand is that the country’s 20 lakh Bahujans be granted gun licenses immediately. The government should provide us with a 50% subsidy for the purchase of weapons and pistols. We will defend ourselves, ”he said on Twitter.
A 19-year-old woman was gang-raped by four upper caste men in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, on September 14. The woman succumbed to her injuries on September 29, the local police cremating the body at 2.30 a.m. the next day. The family has alleged that the cremation was forceful and carried out without their presence, while the administration has maintained that it was done with the consent of the family.
The hastily organized cremation has sparked accusations from the opposition that authorities were trying to suppress the evidence.
