A corrupt approach has been made to an Indian Premier League player, Ajit Singh, BCCI’s ACU chief, confirmed to the Press Trust of India. While the identity of the player and the team has not been revealed, it is understood that the approach was not made in person with teams that were left in a bio-bubble.
“Yes (a player has reported approaching),” said Ajit Singh, the former DGP of the Rajasthan Police. “We are tracking him (the person who approached). It will take some time.”
With teams in a biosecurity bubble, ACU has held several virtual counseling sessions to educate players and support staff on corrupt approaches. Prior to the tournament, BCCI also enlisted Sportradar, a leading provider of sports integrity solutions and data products, to work alongside the ACU in monitoring and safeguarding the integrity of the tournament.
“The company’s Fraud Detection System (FDS) monitors the odds in the markets of more than 600 bookmakers and these bookmakers are of different types, from different countries, different regions, including the so-called gray market or the illegal operators, “Tom Mace, who runs Sportradar’s global operations, had previously revealed.
The FDS is set up to track changes in these probabilities and the system generates alerts when there is a potentially suspicious and unusual movement in the market, which is flagged, and then analysts take control. FDS staff held their first online session with IPL players in the United Arab Emirates on September 15 and followed it up with other sessions as well.
It is the first time the BCCI has stepped forward in finding ways to curb the threat of the bookmaker outside of its own existing ecosystem. Until now, the board relied on its ACU team that would work with local police intelligence and the force to track down illegal gambling across the country.
