June was the worst month for India: the fatality rate had peaked at 3.4% and the average daily growth rate of deaths was over 10%. Both rates have dropped dramatically, but now Covid cases and deaths are spreading across the country.
Five states, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, account for more than two-thirds of deaths in India.
Thirty-seven percent of deaths occur in Maharashtra alone.
In terms of death rates, Delhi, Puducherry, Goa and Ladakh have more deaths per lakh of population than all except Maharashtra.
The last three counts of 10,000 deaths each occurred in nine days. Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have remained large contributors from the beginning, but the other contributors have changed.
Maharashtra contributed more than 30% of the total deaths when the country’s death toll of one lakh was divided into segments of 10,000 each.
Better than America, worse than neighbors
Compared to the others on the top 5 list in terms of deaths, India has much lower deaths per million population and a lower fatality rate (deaths per 100 cases). But compared to its neighborhood, India is worse on both parameters.
New hot spots emerge
Over the past month, the states that have seen the steepest spike in deaths aren’t the ones with a large proportion so far, and that’s a worrying sign of new problem areas. Although in some cases, like Himachal Pradesh, it is due to the low base.
